One of my favorite go-to snacks is an Acai bowl or smoothie. It is so refreshing and delicious, and on top of that the health benefits are endless!
Acai is the most nutrient dense fruit out there because it is naturally SUGAR FREE and LOADED with antioxidants (500x more than blueberries), which is where the bright purple color comes from.
Antioxidants help to fight against free radicals which contribute to aging, inflammation, damaged DNA, joint and muscle pain and often lead to cancer. Eating foods that are high in antioxidants helps to create a barrier against these damaging effects and can slow down signs of aging.
The most noticeable signs of free radical damage show up on your skin in the form of wrinkles, dark spots, and discoloration. When you eat a diet rich in antioxidants, the body is able to repair and prevent any damage being done by a poor diet, too much UV light exposure, and environmental pollutants.
Acai can also help you to maintain a healthy weight due to its ability to control blood sugar levels. This allows you to stay fuller longer and reduce any cravings that you would get after a meal that is often high in sugar. It also works as a natural colon, liver and kidney cleanser by removing toxins and preventing any toxic build up in the intestines which contributes to bloating, constipation and ultimately disease.
Acai is a fatty fruit so it pairs well with anything, as it can adapt to different tastes. This also helps to absorb its own vitamins A, C and E since these are fat-soluble vitamins (you need fat to absorb them). It also contains iron, omega 3’s, fiber, calcium, zinc, protein, and some B vitamins such as B1, B2 and B3. The electrolytes found in it help maintain fluidity in the cells which make this a great snack after an intense workout! Acai is also estimated to have 10-30 times the amount of anthocyanins found in red wine, Now THIS is a superfood!
Luckily, you can find this amazing fruit in the freezer section at any health food store. I love to blend it with blueberries and a couple pieces of frozen banana, then top it with fresh fruit like strawberries, kiwi or banana. When you’re in a hurry and need something quick, just add more liquid and turn it into a super antioxidant smoothie to take with you on the road!
You can also make it a healthier popsicle option for kids by blending it with water and re-freezing it with popsicle sticks! Or try pouring it into an ice cube tray to use for flavored water!
If you haven’t already tried this amazing super fruit, then I highly recommend you pick some up the next time you’re at the store. I always have it stocked in my freezer in case I need a quick fulfilling snack!
