Does fruit cause weight gain?

This is a common question that gets asked. Many people stay away from fruit thinking it will cause weight gain, but then they don’t hesitate to eat a sugar filled protein bar for lunch which is pretty much just a candy bar. It’s funny how our minds trick us into thinking a packaged food is healthier than a natural food.

Fruit is one of the best natural cleansers for the body. It has the highest water content of any other food group, and is loaded with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids. It breaks down the fastest in our bodies, providing us with immediate energy.

The reason people believe fruit can cause weight gain is because most fruits are high in sugar. But you’re not eating refined sugar which has no nutritional value. A whole fruit contains a lot of fiber, vitamins and minerals which helps to break down the fructose naturally found in fruit. When you take the fructose out and consume it in a processed form with nothing else to break it down, that’s when the blood sugar levels spike and weight gain comes in. Because fruit helps to cleanse the body, it can actually help you lose weight rather than gain weight.

Remember though, just because you eat an apple doesn’t mean you are necessarily absorbing all the nutrients from it. Our digestive system needs to be working effectively to ensure we are getting the nutrients we need. This means going to the bathroom on a regular basis. Try adding a green smoothie to your diet to increase your fiber intake and help you to stay regular!
